A product that is a follow up to the company’s USB720. The USB727 is a more attractive product than many of the mobile broadband cards we have seen in the past. The first thing people will notice is that it is smaller than you might expect.

At about 3.5″ x 1″ x 0.5″ the USB727 is not much bigger than a pack of chewing gum and isn’t much heavier either. Some additions you might not expect are a microSD slot (up to 4GB) and an external antenna jack in case you want to get a little bit more reach, though an antenna is not included. That microSD slot could come in handy if you need to transfer data to a device like a cell phone, but don’t want to carry a card reader with you.

As with much of the competition, it has a flip-up antenna and a LED indicator light across the top. It is GPS-capable (depending on your carrier) and has no battery on-board so it’s always ready to go. As we have pointed out in the past, USB is generally the best option for mobile broadband. ExpressCard and PC card versions are both great for some applications, but they will not work with as wide a range of notebooks and won’t be able to plug into a desktop or a typical ultramobile system.

USB modems are not only the most versatile option, but they are the smallest because they don’t need the width of a card slot. The design of the USB727 is simple and effective. It is a sleek, black plastic with a pop-off cap that protects the USB connector and an antenna on the opposite end. The antenna is normally folded down and invisible, but when necessary it can be turned up in order to maximize reception, though the use of an external antenna would be more affective.

When the modem is active an LED band flashes along the middle of the USB727, just below the logo. A lanyard is included so that you don’t have to worry about losing the device–you can just loop the lanyard around your bag and unclip the modem when necessary. Iam having a problem installing the usb727 on my hp 4420 laptop it goes through the software install and when it gets to the point where it tells me to insert the device i do this and windows does its thing and finds and installs all needed drivers and it says hardware ahs been installed and ready to use. The problem is with the next button on this screen, it nevers goes black it stays greyed out and is unclickable.
